Spain: Year Immersion Programs - University of Barcelona

Host Institution

University of Barcelona (UB)

Highlights

The oldest of Catalonia’s universities, the University of Barcelona has outgrown its historic campus in the center of Barcelona, which houses the Facultades de Filología and Matemáticas as well as the EAP Study Center. The three satellite campuses in Pedralbes, Vall d’Hebron, and Bellvitge are all accessible by bus and metro within 30 minutes. Barcelona is a thriving seaport and tourist center with good connections to the rest of northern Spain. (details)

Duration

Academic year: mid-August to early July (calendar)

Academic Focus

Regular university courses in most academic disciplines are available, as well as a selection of core courses specially organized by the EAP Study Center.

Courses previously taken by EAP students are listed at the Course Finder, although students are urged to check the current UAB offerings (click on English in the upper right-hand corner, then on Undergraduate).

The Faculty of Fine Arts offers instruction in studio art, but space is extremely limited and admission is very competitive. Art majors should refer to the EAP website for UB program details. The Study Center also arranges internships for qualified students.

Students attend classes with host country students and international students.

Language of Instruction

Spanish and Catalan

Language study

The program begins with a four-week Spanish intensive language program (ILP). During the year Spanish language study is available but not required; Catalan language study is available and highly recommended.

Units

Students are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad.

ILP: 3 to 6 UC quarter units
Term: Students generally enroll in four courses to meet the minimum requirement of 18 UC quarter units per semester.

Housing

During the ILP, students live in program-assigned housing. After the ILP, students find their own housing in apartments, private homes, boarding houses, or colegios mayores (university residences) and live with international students, UC students, or host country students. (details)

Estimated Cost
