Spain: Beyond the Classroom

The information below is for 2007-08.

Independent Study/Internships

When needed and agreed upon, independent study can be done under the supervision of the Study Center Director. On rare occasions, a Spanish professor will agree to supervise an independent study project. Interested students should make arrangements after arrival in Spain. Limitations are placed on the number of units that can be taken through independent study. Internships are also available at some locations.

Complete information on internships is only available after arrival in Spain. Interested students should think carefully about their interests and objectives before departure, but placement possibilities vary from year to year, and specific information comes from the Study Center Director after the start of the program.

Barcelona: Internships

EAP in Barcelona offers students the opportunity to apply for an internship with various local organizations. Internships start in late January and last through the end of May. Students must devote a minimum of 10 hours per week for 15 weeks toward the internship, and will receive a minimum of 2 UC quarter units for the internship. The Study Center announces available internships to all students early in November. In order to receive a grade, interns are required to submit a serious academic paper to the Study Center Director at the end of the internship.

After internship options are announced, the Study Center provides an orientation and informational meeting to all interested students. In order to be considered for an internship placement, students must submit a petition and resumé to the Study Center Director by November 30th. The student's major area must be related to the requested internship. The internship supervisor assesses each intern by means of a written evaluation submitted to the EAP Barcelona Study Center Director. In past years, the Barcelona Study Center has offered internships in the following disciplines: education, psychology, Spanish, medicine, pharmacology, political science, and public relations.

Some past internship placements have included:

  • Hospital Clinic of Barcelona
  • Benjamin Franklin School
  • International consulting firms
  • Publishers
  • Welfare division of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalonian autonomous government)
  • Carles Riba kindergarden
  • Institute of Political Science of Barcelona
  • Fundación RCD Español
  • BCN Books (international bookstore)
  • Department of Pharmacy, University of Barcelona
  • SOS Racisme (non-profit organization for immigrants)

Madrid: Internships/Community Service

The Madrid EAP Study Center coordinates internship opportunities in a variety of fields. Interested students must pre-register during the program's orientation in Spain in order to participate in an internship during the first or second semester. Students should have completed course work in a subject area related to the internship placement. All interns are evaluated by the internship supervisor and are required to maintain a journal and complete a research paper in order to receive academic credit. At the beginning of the internship, the student, the sponsoring organization, and the EAP Study Center Director sign a mutual agreement outlining the terms of the internship. Internships are available for students studying in the Complutense or the University of Alcalá.

EAP students in Madrid can also contact Voluntariado, an organization that collects information about local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and their activities. Voluntariado helps to place volunteers in their field of interest. Volunteers may or may not receive academic credit for their service project, depending on arrangements made with the Study Center. Students may become involved in education, the environment, animal rights, and sustainable development.
