Sweden: Joint UC-Lund University Summer Program, Europe and America—A Dialog on Critical World Issues
Host InstitutionHighlightsThis program provides a unique opportunity for Swedish students and UC undergraduates to jointly explore European and American perceptions of global issues and cross-Atlantic relations grounded in international relations, environmental awareness, the social sciences, technology, and the arts. Eight specially designed courses are the result of collaborative efforts by UC and Lund faculty, who also teach in the program. Instruction is in English. The program is divided into two 4-week modules and students enroll in one course per module. Lund and UC students take courses together, working on joint research assignments. A biweekly distinguished lecture series features leaders whose roles address important transatlantic topics. UC students also enroll in a one-week orientation course in Swedish language and society and participate in a four-day excursion to either Brussels or Berlin. (details) DurationSummer: mid-June to late August (calendar) Students may extend their EAP participation from the summer to the fall or year program at Lund University. A residence permit must be obtained before departure and GPA requirements must be met. Academic FocusCourse topics are interdisciplinary and include the political history of Europe and visions of the future; critical world issues from the perspective of American cinema; the ethics and politics of multiculturalism in Liberal-democratic societies; global warming—science and society; human rights and the Middle East; energy security and sustainability in a larger Europe; democracy, pluralism, and culture; and enthusiasm and fanaticism in transatlantic perspective. Language of InstructionEnglish Language studyA 2-unit orientation course titled Swedish Language and Society is required for UC students. UnitsStudents enroll in the 2-unit orientation course and one core course per module at 5 UC quarter units each; 12 UC quarter units are required. HousingStudents will be assigned to single rooms in a university dormitory. Students live in one of the large, modern student complexes. The rooms themselves are plain, but usually larger than typical UC dorm rooms. Students live mainly with other UC students and some Swedish university students.
