Sweden: Student Comments

“My time abroad has been unequaled! I gained experience in a different culture and gained a new perspective on what's important to me.”

—EAP Student

“EAP gave me the most incredible year of my life: friends, experiences, learning, surviving, happiness, strength, love, travel, and independence!”

—EAP Student

“Go for it! At times it will be difficult, but it is a definite learning experience. You'll learn Swedish, you'll learn about Sweden, you'll learn to look at the U.S. in a new way, and perhaps most importantly, you will learn about yourself.”

—EAP Student

“Nothing can compare with being immersed in another culture; it provides a depth of experience that cannot be duplicated through ordinary travel. EAP provided that immersion for me-it was an unparalleled opportunity to learn about a foreign country. Not a day goes by that I don't remember my time in Sweden, even 20 years later.”

—Kelley Arletta, UC Berkeley
Lund University, 1975-76

“There are without doubt certain allowances one is afforded while living and studying abroad that aren't available in the home country. I was, for the first time in my life, able to come to a near objective view of my country and people, to consider those things that I had taken for granted back home, and to realize the luxury of living among those whose lifestyles, language, and drives are very similar and complementary to my own. In this sense, Sweden presented me with an important opportunity to define my life back home. Yet at the same time, I was given the chance to settle into a different culture and associate with a different people, speaking their language, carrying out their traditions (I vividly recall dancing around the Christmas tree with family in December) and beginning to see the world as they do.”

—Shawn Haghighi, UC Berkeley
Lund University, 2000

“One of the techniques in Sweden that I thought was very useful and not done so much in the U.S. is the critiquing of everyone's paper by fellow students. It keeps you on your toes to know you have to explain and defend what you've written, and reading other students' papers helps give better perspective on the different styles out there.”

—Salem Kimble, UC Santa Barbara
Joint UC/Lund, 2005-06

“EAP gave me a chance not just to visit another culture but to live in it, be a part of it, assimilate myself to it. This was the most significant experience of my life for coming to grips with the world and my place in it as an American.”

—Gordon Lindeen, UC Los Angeles
Lund University, 1982-83

“My classes and the people I've met here in Lund have changed my point of view about life and the world. I've learned things that I would never have learned in my architectural studies at Berkeley. I will miss the cobblestone streets, the little houses, the people, speaking Swedish-everything!”

—Elisa Lui, UC Berkeley
Lund University, 1997-98

“When I left UC Davis to attend university in southern Sweden I was just another biology student. I never dreamed that I'd return to California a passionate researcher in evolutionary studies. My second summer in Sweden, I landed a research position that changed my life. Unlike most research jobs, I was not in a lab, nor was I wearing protective gloves. I didn't even have to be inside! I used to think that these kinds of chances only came to those who were at the right place at the right time. Now I realize that opportunities are always present for those who go after them. ”

—Nina Nowshiravani, UC Davis
Lund University, 2002-03

“An academic year abroad at the University of Lund, Sweden, provided me with an invaluable perspective on inventive policy solutions to social and economic challenges. In particular, my exposure to Sweden's national debate over economic liberalization and participation in European integration strongly influenced and aided my decision to pursue a PhD concentrating on international political economy and trade policy.”

—David Rankin, UC Los Angeles
Lund University, 1987-88

“"The opportunities for independent research at Lund are almost endless. Professors are open and available. From an academic and social standpoint my experiences at Lund University have changed my life for the better.”

—Lisa Schwarz, UC San Diego
Lund Unviersity, 1993-94

“I honestly feel that part of the reason I am now employed at a Spanish university (while pursuing my PhD in education at the same university) is due to my experience in the EAP program. It was a real eye-opener.”

—Cathryn Teasley, UC Berkeley
Lund University, 1981-82

“The University of Lund in Sweden has a great social setup for students called Nations. They are like fraternities only they're coed and everyone has to join one. In the morning they are great for big, cheap meals and at night they have a bar and a dance floor. I worked as a bartender in one of them and got free drinks all night long, and then everyone who worked partied and had a huge meal at the end of the night. It was great.”

—Lenny Van Boven, UC Davis
Lund University, 2004-05

“My EAP experience affected my career interests and most likely influenced my decision to join the Peace Corps. I would now note international travel and the study of other cultures as very important pursuits in my life.”

—Scott Williams, UC Davis
Lund University, 1982-83

“My year abroad in the EAP program opened my eyes to a world of opportunities. Ever since I lived and studied abroad, I have been unable to drag myself away from cultural and international affairs. A great and rewarding experience!”

—James Yamanaka, UC San Diego
Lund University, 1987-88
