Turkey: Student Comments

“The part that I enjoyed most about the Turkey EAP program is the chance to experience a completely new culture in such a hospitable environment that makes me feel right at home. As students who are excited to learn about Turkish customs and language, my friends and I often find ourselves surrounded by locals who are equally eager to teach us about their culture. My enthusiasm not only helped me to learn the Turkish language, but also enabled me to make lifetime friends and provided me with the opportunity to attend unique festivities, such as Turkish weddings. Aside from helping me toward my degree, the Turkey EAP program is truly exceptional in the sense that it allowed me to study in a foreign country without having to worry about major concerns like housing. Meanwhile, it also granted me a great deal of independence that allowed me to explore Turkey and its neighboring countries. My EAP Turkey experience not only enriched me intellectually and academically, but also prepared me for my future career abroad and gave me the confidence to travel. EAP undoubtedly helped me access opportunities to immerse in the Turkish culture. By connecting me with helpful staff members at the host university, and by arranging for me to stay in a Turkish dormitory, I learned about various internships and extracurricular activities that fostered my intellectual, academic, and personal growth. ”

“The primary benefit I got from studying abroad was improving my people skills. Turks are very hospitable and they grow up learning to say certain, very polite things in specific situations-a skill that Americans seem to have lost. It is almost a social requirement that these things be said. Turks enter a room saying good day, good morning, good afternoon, or good evening and they always send someone away with well wishes, good thoughts, and good luck. Turks are very thoughtful and this is one quality that I hope to maintain here at home.”
