Highlights

This English-language, semester program offers a combination of EAP-designed courses in Vietnamese and Southeast Asian studies, Vietnamese language courses, and a limited number of Hanoi University courses on business or economic subjects. A number of study trips, including week-long trips to central Vietnam and to southern Vietnam, are integral features of the program. All courses (except language courses) are taught in English by US and local faculty members or other expert scholars. (details)

Fall semester: mid-August to late December (calendar)

Academic Focus

Contemporary issues in Vietnamese society and politics, history, international relations, literature, and Southeast Asian studies; a few courses at Hanoi University, mostly in business administration and economics.

  • Society and Culture in Contemporary Vietnam (required core course)
  • Vietnamese International Relations
  • Modern Vietnamese History
  • Vietnamese Politics
  • Political Economy and Development
  • Organizational Behavior
  • Principles of Marketing
  • Macroeconomics
  • Beginning Vietnamese as a Foreign Language
  • Vietnamese for Heritage Learners (introductory, intermediate, and advanced)

Students attend classes with mostly UC students and other American students.

Language of Instruction

English

Language Study

Language study is required. Students with no prior experience study beginning Vietnamese as a second language. Heritage learners study introductory, intermediate, or advanced Vietnamese.

Units

Students are required to take a full-time course of study on EAP; 21 UC quarter units per semester are required, which is normally four courses.

Housing

EAP students reside on campus in international or local student dormitories. Off-campus and private housing is not permitted. (details)
