Vietnam: Beyond the Classroom

Independent study opportunities in Vietnam may be available, depending on the topic, the student’s overall academic program, the availability of an appropriate faculty supervisor, and the recommendation of the Study Center Director.

The ability to do independent research while on EAP in Vietnam is limited. Students who wish to do any kind of research in libraries or archives must be fluent in either French or Vietnamese. Students who wish to make use of local resources must be prepared to face a great deal of red tape, including procuring letters of introduction, filling out applications to use libraries or archives, and acquiring sponsors. All newspapers are written in Vietnamese, which requires a minimum of intermediate-level Vietnamese reading skills.

Interested students should discuss the possibility of independent study or research with their Campus EAP Office prior to departure. The Campus EAP Office will forward their request to the Academic Specialist at the Universitywide Office of EAP, who will consult with the Study Center Director.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

A wide range of volunteer and non-credit internship positions are available to EAP students in Vietnam. In the past, UC students have interned at the U.S. Consulate, the Vietnam Economic Times, and at non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Hanoi such as Counterpart, Catholic Relief Services, and the Red Cross. Volunteer positions are common, especially ones that involve teaching English for non-profit organizations such as the Hanoi Orphans’ Center and the Research and Training for Community Development Center.
