University of Queensland, Brisbane
Queensland’s School of
Journalism and Communication is considered a leader in journalism
education. The school emphasizes law, ethics, investigative methods, and
news media theory. The school produces a mainstream monthly newspaper,
the Queensland Independent (www.sjc.uq.edu.au/tqi). Broadcast students
produce a weekly current affairs program on Brisbane public radio. The
school also publishes student-produced news programs on the Internet.
UC students can enroll in a variety of courses in intercultural, interpersonal,
organizational, and media studies, including:

University of Wollongong
The School of Social Sciences, Media, and Communication is interdisciplinary
and focuses on the dynamics between interaction and conversation, text
and image, and the role of communication industries and communication
technologies. The program draws upon a number of other areas, including
sociology, science and technology studies, creative arts, philosophy,
history, English, and politics. Course topics include:

Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro
The Department
of Social Communication offers course work in two tracks: advertising
and journalism. Both tracks feature theoretical and interdisciplinary
courses that connect the study of communication to other considerations
of culture and technology.
The department has a television studio, a digital sound studio, a photo
laboratory and a multimedia projection lab.
A list of all department courses with short descriptions and prerequisites
is posted at the above website. The academic year runs from January to
December and all classes are taught in Portuguese. All students enroll
in a four-week intensive language program preceding the spring semester.
Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Santiago
The Faculty
of Communications through its School of Journalism is organized to
prepare and support professional journalists in written, audiovisual and
interactive media. The department's two tracks both stress investigative
and narrative skills as well as the ethical questions encountered Beyond
the Classroom. The journalism track further emphasizes new forms of communication
in society, and the audiovisual track concentrates on new technologies
and elements of audiovisual language.
Programs begin with a three-week intensive Spanish language program.
All courses are taught in Spanish.
University of Chile, Santiago
At the University of Chile, the Institute
of Communication and Image offers a range of courses to undergraduates
through its School of Journalism. In addition to theoretical course work
dealing with visual culture, analysis of image and text, epistemology
of communication, semiology, and freedom of expression, the program offers
a variety of workshops in reporting, editing, interviewing, audiovisual
narrative, investigative journalism and related skills. Programs begin
with a three-week intensive Spanish language program. All courses are
taught in Spanish.
American University in Cairo
EAP students have a unique opportunity to enroll in a wide range of communication
studies courses with students from Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries
at AUC. The Journalism
and Mass Communications Program includes course work in media history,
ethics, and responsibility. Students are exposed to theories and philosophies
that run counter to American concepts of communication. Courses consider
issues specific to Egypt and the Middle East and topics such as:

- Public Opinion and Communication
- Mass Media Ethics and Responsibility
- World Media Systems and Global Information Flow
A five-day "survival" Arabic language course precedes the year.
Arabic language study is required each term.

University of Grenoble III (Stendahl)
EAP students can study communication in French through the Communications
Program at the University of Grenoble. The program is divided into
three primary tracks: audiovisual communication and multimedia, journalism,
and business communication. The program incorporates practical learning
opportunities, such as internships and independent projects, to reinforce
theoretical classroom material. Sample courses include:

University of Lyon 2
The Institute of Communication
at Lyon 2 focuses on the theories and social phenomena of communication;
communication law and economics; and new technologies and media. Courses

Georg August University, Göttingen
Recent developments affecting Germany, including reunification and
European integration, present numerous opportunities for studies Beyond
the Classroom of communication. Georg-August University's Institute
of Communications provides a solid foundation in the history of mass
communication and the political, social, and economic aspects of communication
theory. International and intercultural mass communication is a major
research emphasis. Major departmental areas of study include:

Students must have completed two years of university-level German, or
have completed one year and be enrolled in EAP’s Pre-ILP in Germany.
(Spring semester students also must have taken at least one upper-division
course taught entirely in German.) The fall and year options begin with
a six-week intensive German language program.
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)
The School of Journalism and
Communication at CUHK has a strong reputation in communication education
and research. The undergraduate program offers five tracks of study: broadcast
journalism, print journalism, advertising and public relations, multimedia
and telecommunications, and media studies. Courses are interdisciplinary
and borrow from areas of expertise in other departments. EAP courses taught
in English may include:

- Statistics for Communication Studies
- The Internet, Multimedia, and Information Society
- Public Opinion and Mass Media
A number of other courses taught in Cantonese and standard Chinese are
available.
Students with advanced Chinese may take regular CUHK courses offered
in either Cantonese or standard Chinese.
University of Hyderabad
The Department of Communication is part of the Sarojini Naidu School of
Performing Arts, Fine Arts, and Communication. The school is located at
Golden Threshold, the nationalist poet Sarojini Naidu's ancestral home
and now a national heritage monument. In addition to skill-based courses
in production, scripting, and editing, the department offers courses on
the history of media in India, development studies, analyzing television,
political economy of new information technologies, international communication,
Indian cinema, and communication and culture. Related internships with
media organizations and communication-related NGOs may be arranged. Following
a four-week intensive Hindi language program in Mussorrie, EAP students
travel to Hyderabad for the fall semester. Language study continues during
the fall.
University of Bologna
The Department
of Communications at the University of Bologna emphasizes the study
of mass communication. Umberto Eco, renowned semiologist and novelist,
founded the program in 1993. EAP students may enroll in a wide range of
courses, taught in Italian, such as:

The academic year program begins with a six-week intensive Italian language
program beginning in late August. (Students who have not completed the
two year university-level Italian language prerequisite are required to
attend EAP's summer pre-intensive language program.)
Students who have advanced Japanese language skills (three years or more
of university-level Japanese) may spend an academic year in Japan and
attend regular university courses in communication studies at one of the
universities listed below. Programs in Japan begin with a six-week intensive
Japanese language program.
International Christian University, Tokyo
The Division of International Studies offers an area of concentration
in international communication and linguistics that includes international
journalism and simultaneous interpretation. Other departments also offer
communication courses. The majority of the courses are taught in Japanese.

EAP students in Korea begin their program with a six-week intensive
Korean language program. Instruction is in English and Korean. Continued
Korean language study is required each term for students who are not fluent.
Yonsei University, Seoul
The Department of Mass Communication at Yonsei was established to provide
students with education in human and mass communications. The curriculum
offers courses on broad theories of communication, research methods, and
hands-on experience in newspaper publishing, broadcasting, television
production, and advertising. A number of courses are taught in English
but many others are taught in Korean, for which fluency in academic Korean
language is required.

National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City
Within the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, UNAM has an excellent
program in Communication Sciences with
a broad range of courses that address communication in conjunction with
social science, art, and culture and in terms of society's right to information.
All programs share a concern with technological, methodological and theoretical
issues. Specialties include organizational communication, political communication,
journalism, audiovisual production, and advertising.
The program begins with a four-week intensive Spanish language program.
All instruction is in Spanish.
Tec de Monterrey
At Tec de Monterrey the Communications Department offers a wide variety
of courses concerned with the practical, technological, and theoretical
aspects of communication. Students with advanced Spanish language skills
may focus on television and film, journalism, corporate communication
including advertising and public relations, as well as intercultural communication
and several theoretical courses. Tec also offers several classes in English,
including Intercultural Communication and International Communication.
National University of Singapore
The interdisciplinary program in
Information and Communications Management draws on both the Faculty
of Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Computing to offer courses
that develop the skills needed for the analysis and processing of various
forms of information, the management of its dissemination, the effective
use of information technology, and communication processes. Two concentrations
are available: one focuses on the development, impacts, and policy issues
associated with information and communication technologies; the other deals
with the creation and communication of content, and relates to design, writing,
and project management in new media. A few of the number of courses offered

The Department of Media and Communication
offers courses in which students study conceptual issues related to the
media, society, and cultural identities; explore the understanding of
visual signs from diverse sources; and combine critical perspectives with
practical aspects of writing and publishing. Additional courses are available
in the departments of Sociology and Applied Language Studies. Participation
in an internship with campus paper and electronic publications may be

Autonomous University of Barcelona
The Faculty of Communication Science
at the UAB offers degrees in Audiovisual Communication, Information Management,
Journalism, and Publicity and Public Relations. EAP students may take
classes from any of these tracks, all of which offer a wide range of theoretical
course work as well as classes on more specific applications. The widest
range of opportunities is available to those students willing to take
classes with Catalan as the language of instruction, although there are
also many classes taught in Spanish. The yearlong program begins with
a four-week intensive language program and includes some instruction in
Catalan.
Complutense University of Madrid
The depth of communications opportunities at the Complutense University
of Madrid is indicated by the wide range of departments within the Faculty
of Information Science, including Audiovisual Communication and Advertising,
Journalism I (Information Text Analysis), Journalism II (Structure and
Technology of Information), Journalism III (General Theory of Information),
History of Social Communication, and Sociology of Public Opinion and Mass
Culture, among others. Complutense departments cooperate to offer hundreds
of courses, many of which are interdisciplinary in focus. There are courses
to address both theoretical and practical issues as they examine the interrelationships
of various forms of communication. Emphasis is often placed on investigating
potential applications of new technologies. UC students can enroll in
courses through any of these departments. All courses are taught in Spanish;
the yearlong program begins with a four-week intensive language program.
University of Leeds
The University of Leeds was a pioneer in the academic study of communication
in Britain. The Institute of Communications
Studies (ICS) was founded in 1988 and is one of the largest departments
of its kind in a British university. In 1998, the institute secured an
"excellent" rating for its teaching, learning, and assessment
by the Quality Assurance Agency. The ICS uses an interdisciplinary approach
to examine how technology can be used creatively to produce cultural artifacts
that have social, psychological, and political dimensions. Undergraduate
