2008 Duttenhaver Scholars Program
For Full-Year Programs which Depart in Fall 2008
Up to 42 $5,000 scholarships to be
awarded
Also available for programs which
depart in January and February, 2009
Eligibility Requirements:
Mandatory:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled at UC.
- Applicants must be planning to attend an EAP year-long immersion
program in one of EAP's Northern Hemisphere programs departing in fall
2008 and ultimately be selected for the program.
- Applicants must not have had any previous study abroad experience.
- Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA at the time of scholarship
application.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need.
- Applicants must have a passion for studying abroad and a willingness
to embrace and learn from the host country's customs, language, and
culture.
- Scholarship recipients must be willing to write a 2-page report (within one month of the official end of their EAP program) and submit this report to their EAP Campus Office. (A one-page mid-term report will be requested via email by UOEAP in January 2009.) These reports should describe the student’s experiences while abroad and how study abroad affected them. These reports will be forwarded to the donor of the scholarships.
In addition, the following requirements are highly preferred and at least one of them must be met:
- Applicants must have at least 2 years of coursework, or the equivalent,
by the time of departure, in the language of the host country.
- Applicants must have taken coursework in subjects related to the
host region, such as literature, culture, politics, etc.
- Applicants must have an academic major that corresponds to the academic
strength of the host institution, so that a student's academic development
is enhanced by study at the specific host institution.
Application Process:
To apply for the Duttenhaver Scholars Program, it is imperative that
all of the following materials be turned in to the Campus
EAP Office by the application deadline of March 5, 2008. Please contact
your Campus EAP Office if you are having any problems with any part of
the application.
Please submit one complete application packet. Please do not submit application
in folders or binders.
Your packet should contain in the following order:
- Duttenhaver Scholars Application Form,
including the signed "Authorization for Release of Information."
- Personal Essay (see Application
for details)
- Statement of Financial Need (see Application
for details)
- Letter of Recommendation
To be considered, your file must include one letter of recommendation.
You may use a letter that has been solicited for your general EAP application.
Your letter should come from a TA or faculty member who knows you and
your academic work. Personal references are not acceptable for this
application.
- A copy of your transcript that shows grades through your last completed
quarter
- A copy of your financial aid award notification for 2007-2008. If you received no financial aid for 2007-08, please provide a statement indicating that you are applying for financial aid for 2008-09 and the circumstances that have changed to require you to apply for financial aid, OR provide a statement describing the circumstances that place you in financial need.
Selection Process:
- Up to 42 Duttenhaver Scholars are expected to be named throughout the UC system (. Each campus will have up to 5 students named as Duttenhaver Scholars; except UCSB which will have up to 6 students named as Duttenhaver Scholars per donor request; and UC Merced which will have up to 2 students named as Duttenhaver Scholars).
- To be considered, completed applications must be delivered to the student's respective Campus EAP Office no later than March 5, 2008.
- Each Campus EAP Office will select 8finalists by March 14, 2008 (UCSB will select 10 and UC Merced will select 4). The application packets for these 124 finalists will be forwarded to the donor for her review. The donor will select the final Duttenhaver Scholars for the EAP programs which depart in fall 2008.
- By April 17, 2008, the Director of UCEAP will announce the names of the recipients of Duttenhaver Scholarships.
