Special Country Scholarships
Scholarships may be available from the host
universities and other public and private organizations. After acceptance, students should
contact their host university to inquire about additional scholarship possibilities.
Germany
Georg-August University
Göttingen Partner Scholarship
UC students intending to study at Georg-August University may apply for Göttingen Partner Scholarships. Scholarships are awarded to full-year students who have excellent academic records and specific proposals for activities that promote partnership and international understanding. These activities include (but are not limited to):
- Activities that increase acquaintance with the cultural
institutions of Germany and Europe, such as attendance at conferences, film festivals,
exhibits, or such events as the Frankfurt Book Fair;
- Pursuit of scholarly research on Germany and Europe via
work in archives, libraries, special collections, or visits to historical and cultural
sites;
- Community involvement, such as presentations in schools,
attendance at cultural festivals, participation in community events;
- Exploration of German and European political
institutions through observation of parliamentary functions or party events, or visits
to or interviews with politicians and diplomats.
In past years the scholarship has been 2,400 DM (about
$1,500). Future amounts may vary. The application includes a one-page essay. A committee
designated by EAP reviews student essays, nominates students, and forwards nominations to
Georg-August for final selection.
Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus Graduate Fellowships
Abgeordnetenhaus Graduate Fellowships, administered by EAP and the UC Berkeley Center for
German and European Studies, are available to graduate students participating in EAP in
Berlin at Humboldt University, Technical University, or Free University.
These fellowships,
which are sponsored by the ‘Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses von
Berlin’, promote scholarship by graduate students from the U.S., Great Britain,
France, and the countries of the former Soviet Union. The fellowships are to
be used to advance
academic scholarship at a Berlin institution of higher education, and are available
for
projects concerned with Berlin, German, or German-international questions.
Graduate students receive DM 1,500 per month (about $635) for the academic year (ten
months), plus travel costs to and from Berlin for recipients not already residing in
Berlin. Free lodging in the Internationales Studienzentrum Berlin is an obligatory
component of the scholarship program.
Applicants must have outstanding academic qualifications and be ranked at the top of their
class on their UC campus.
Egypt
The American University in Cairo
Simpson Egyptology Scholarships
AUC Simpson Egyptology Scholarships are available to junior and senior study
abroad students enrolled at AUC who have an interest in Egyptology. The awards
are based on academic excellence and provide $2,500 per semester (up to a maximum
of $5,000 for the year) toward the student's cost of attending AUC. Five
full scholarships are awarded each year. The Scholarship Application must be
filed by April 15 to apply for the following academic year. Additional information

Diversity Abroad
Diversity Abroad is offering a new grant for African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American students to study in Turkey. Any EAP student from one of those ethnic background is eligible for a $2,000 grant for semester study and/or $1,000 for summer study in Turkey.

Heiwa Nakajima Foundation Scholarships
Qualified international students
attending certain Japanese universities may be eligible to receive
Monbukagakusho Scholarships, JASSO Scholarships,
or Heiwa Nakajima Foundation Scholarships. These scholarships generally
provide a generous monthly stipend and other benefits such as one-way
or round-trip
transportation. EAP will provide students with additional information
after acceptance into the program.
The Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ) Bridging Project
The ATJ Bridging Project awards numerous scholarships to American students
participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students
majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Selection is based on
academic
potential and financial need. Information is available on the ATJ
website.
GENERAL NOTES:
- Government of Japan Scholarships are not available to students
holding Japanese passports.

Students may already be in Japan when notification occurs for the Monbukagakusho,
JASSO, or Heiwa Nakajima scholarships.

Financial aid students who receive one of the Government of Japan scholarships
will have their financial aid repackaged.
