Study Center Directorships
There will not be an Academic Year 2009-10 call for UC faculty applications to serve as Study Center Directors abroad. The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) is undergoing structural reorganization as a consequence of budget constraints and we are not currently recruiting for Study Center Directors.

Pages. An overview of EAP and
its structure is accessed from EAP's
home page.
Most EAP programs are administered abroad from an EAP Study Center
that has been established in cooperation with a university, other
institution, or provider of higher education in the host country.
The President of the University of California appoints UC faculty
members to serve as Study Center Directors for periods ranging from
one semester to two years; they serve as UC’s on-site representative
to the host university or provider.
Directors are responsible for the operation of the EAP Study Center,
and must fulfill both administrative and academic functions. Their
basic academic duties include: submission of an annual report, timely
preparation of information needed to obtain UC approval of new courses,
developing the academic and cultural programs of the Study Center,
advising students on academic and related matters, evaluating student
performance, occasional teaching responsibilities, the assignment
of final grades in consultation with professors and tutors in the
host institution, and advising and screening host university students
who are interested in coming to UC as part of EAP’s reciprocal
exchange programs. Directors also are responsible for interpreting
the culture of the host country to the students and helping them adapt
to their new environments. As on-site representatives of the University
of California, Directors establish, maintain, and nurture relationships
with host universities and their personnel. Directors provide guidance
to the Universitywide Office of EAP on ways to improve both the academic
quality of the program as well as the cultural and intellectual experiences
of the students.
Directors are also responsible for the administration of the Study
Center. In coordination with the Universitywide Office of EAP, Directors
supervise matters related to Study Center personnel (administrative
and instructional), contractual commitments (individual and/or institutional),
acquisition and disposition of office equipment and fixtures, and
implementation of significant changes in the administrative organization
or financial operations of the Study Center. Directors assume fiduciary
responsibility for managing, accounting for, and reporting on funds
allocated to the Study Center, and for supervising Study Center disbursements
in accordance with UC policy. Directors are provided with information
and EAP policies concerning these matters during the EAP Study Center
Director’s Orientation, held annually in Santa Barbara. Finally,
it is expected that,
as circumstances permit, Directors will continue their research.
