Overview
The summer language and culture program is held at East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai. ECNU, one of China's oldest and most reputable universities, is located in the southwest area of the city on an expansive green campus divided by a quiet, tree-lined canal. The university has a modern infrastructure with excellent sports facilities, a wide variety of clubs and activities, and comfortable residence halls on campus. Situated on the east coast of China, Shanghai today is a rapidly developing financial center for China and its tall buildings and neon signs embody the bold, gleaming features of the city as a futuristic international metropolis.
Students attend classes with UC students and other international students. Students also participate in non-credit activities relating to Chinese culture.

You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 12 UC quarter units are required.

Internships and independent study for academic credit are not possible in this program.

Space permitting, qualified students may apply to extend their participation to other EAP programs in China. Extension to the fall Beijing Normal Univ. program is encouraged. A separate application is needed for participation in the fall International Studies, Joint UC-Fudan Univ. (JPIS) program. See the requirements tab for each of these programs for qualifications.
Housing
You can live on or off campus in a foreign student dormitory or apartment in a single or double room shared with other UC students. You may choose to share a room with a local Chinese student, but you must pay the cost of the room.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

Host Institutions
East China Normal University, Shanghai
In the southwest area of Shanghai, East China Normal University (ECNU) is host to an EAP summer intensive Chinese language program. Known as a “garden university” for its beautiful campuses and buildings in both European and traditional Chinese styles, ECNU is home to a top-rated program for teaching Chinese as a second language. ECNU is also distinguished in the subjects of modern Chinese history, Chinese philosophy, mathematics, geography, psychology, the physical and natural sciences, and teacher education. The university has quickly adapted to social and economic changes in China by adding programs in information science, life science ecology, design, economics, sociology, management, and urban studies.
Founded in 1951 on the site of Great China University, ECNU has a modern infrastructure with excellent sports facilities, a library with 3.5 million volumes, student cafeterias and cafés, and residence halls.

Estimated Cost
Participation in EAP is a great value! The cost of EAP programs is typically less than that of non-UC study abroad programs. The dollar figures listed in the chart represent: 1) the amount of the fees that are paid directly to EAP in the current year, and 2) an estimate of the amount needed to cover personal living expenses in this location. Personal travel and entertainment are not included here.
Don't forget that you take your financial aid with you and the amount of your financial aid package will be based on the estimated TOTAL COST of this experience, as it is estimated below.

Application Requirements
Class Level
Sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (language study only, not research)
Language Prerequisite
Minimum of one semester or two quarters of university-level standard Chinese. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since you last took a course in standard Chinese, it is recommended that you refresh your proficiency before departure. Consult with your Campus EAP Advisor for details.
GPA
2.5 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. No exceptions. Graduate students are required to have a 3.0 GPA.
Other
ECNU will not admit you without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
Minimum Criteria
All applicants must also have:
- Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into
the student’s UC degree program
- Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully
to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and
exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
- A willingness to abide by program regulations
- An endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all
campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)
These are minimum program requirements only and do not guarantee selection. The Campus EAP Office determines selection. The final admission decision is made by the host institution.
Deadlines
Application deadlines and information on the application process are available through your Campus EAP Office. Supplemental predeparture materials will be required for many programs, including, but not limited to, host institution applications, visa and housing applications, medical clearances, etc.
