Overview
Peking University is a top-ranked university located beyond the old city walls in northwest Beijing. The surrounding area has undergone great development and reconstruction, with high-rise buildings going up on most corners. The renowned and lovely Beida campus is visited by thousands of tourists year-round. It is conveniently located within easy travel to historical and architectural sites of the capital, as well as more recent modern Olympian constructs recognizable throughout the world.
Students attend classes with international students in the College of Chinese Language and Culture and with host country students in regular Peking University courses (advanced language ability required).
Course Opportunities
Chinese language and culture. If you are linguistically qualified, you may take regular university courses in selected fields.
The EAP curriculum is tailored for three groups of students:
Tier 1: Students with limited Chinese take language study through the College of Chinese Language and Culture. Classes improve proficiency in spoken and written Chinese and provide information about Chinese culture and society.
Tier 2: Students who have language skills above the level offered by the College of Chinese Language and Culture take courses through Peking University's Chinese Department. Courses are designed for foreigners and taught in Chinese at a level more easily understood than that of regular university courses. If language ability is adequate, especially by the second semester, these students are strongly encouraged to take regular university classes.
Tier 3: Students who have native or near-native Chinese ability and who score high on the required language exam usually take at least some of their courses from the university's regular offerings taught in standard Chinese (e.g., in art, Chinese, economics, history, literature, philosophy, and political science). The Study Center hires local students as tutors to assist UC students with their regular university courses.
Use the following resource to learn about EAP courses:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.

- MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

Host Institutions
Peking University, Beijing
Founded in 1898, Peking University is the first national university in modern Chinese history and today is one of China’s most comprehensive and prestigious universities. “Beida,” as the university is commonly called, enrolls about 14,000 undergraduates and 12,000 graduate students. There are also nearly 4,000 international students in short-term or long-term programs. The university consists of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, and Information and Engineering. Peking University also has 56 research institutes, 84 research centers, and 12 national laboratories. The University Library, the largest university library in Asia, contains more than 5.5 million books and 6,500 periodical titles.
The history of the university parallels the development and evolution of modern China. It was a major center of the revolutionary May Fourth Movement of 1919, of resistance movements toward the Japanese in the 1930s, of political debate that presaged the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, of the 1989 student democracy movement, and of student protest against the US destruction of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in May 1999. Current university activities reflect China’s press toward economic development, understanding of associated social and cultural adjustments, environmental impacts of development, and internationalization related to China’s relationship with the world.
