Study Abroad in Ghana

Visit the EAP Media CenterGhana opens the door to exploration of West Africa’s diverse cultures, magnetic musical and artistic creativity, economic developments, and social challenges. A peaceful country under a liberal civilian government, Ghanaian society is celebrated for its rich and warm culture while coastal castles serve as grim reminders of its trans-Atlantic trade slave history. Ghana has one of the best developed educational systems in tropical Africa and celebrates its democratic foundation; yet each day Ghana must address competing concerns and make difficult choices as it progresses in its development.

EAP in Ghana offers a rewarding combination of regular university course work with unique perspectives; the opportunity to conduct independent research, field study, or community service in a dramatically different setting; and immersion in a culture that looks toward the future while retaining the lessons of the past. As you adapt to the challenges of daily life in this emergent African nation, you will gain valuable life experience that far outweighs the temporary sacrifice of comforts of California.

EAP offers fall, spring, and year options at the University of Ghana in Legon. Programs are taught in English and offer a range of courses in the social sciences, arts and humanities, and selected sciences, of particular interest as they include case studies and issues related to West Africa.

Accra

Accra is Ghana’s government seat and main commercial center. A sprawling city of close to two million, Accra is the most densely populated area in Ghana and was formed from the merging of many small towns. One of them, Legon, is home to the University of Ghana and EAP.

Accra is also a cultural center. Museums and galleries display traditional and contemporary local paintings, sculpture, ceramics, rich textiles, and jewelry. The National Museum offers an extensive collection of traditional Ghanaian art. In addition, there are cinemas and venues for live music that blends African rhythms with Western influences. The central business district contains the headquarters of all the large banks in the country, major trading firms, vast open markets, the Supreme Court and Parliament buildings, and the Accra Central Library. Accra also houses the national archives and the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, providing rich resources for independent research or pursuit of internship or volunteer opportunities
