Study Abroad in Hong Kong
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)
Overview
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a comprehensive university that offers outstanding Chinese language instruction and a wide range of course work in English. CUHK is a leading research university with a global vision and mission to combine tradition with modernity and bring together China and the West; it is host to a number of international students among its undergraduates. With more than 300 programs of study available, you can design a program to meet your academic needs. The spacious campus has a unique college structure and is located 45 minutes (by train and subway) from downtown Hong Kong in Shatin in the New Territories.
Students attend classes with international students and host country students.
Course Opportunities
Full curriculum in the arts, humanities, business administration, engineering, science, and social sciences. Unique opportunities are available in business, regional development, Asian politics, and Chinese sociology and anthropology. Chinese language study (Putonghua and Cantonese) is offered at elementary to advanced levels.
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
- Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
- MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study on EAP; 21 UC quarter units per semester are required, which is usually four or five courses depending on the number of units per course.
Language of Instruction
English, Cantonese, Putonghua
Language Study
The study of Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) is not required although it is recommended. A maximum of two Chinese language courses worth 9 UC quarter units (6 CUHK credits) is permitted each term.
Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Research and independent study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Arrangements for either are made at the Study Center after arrival at CUHK. Predeparture preparation may be required.
It may be possible for you to develop your own directed research or independent study project with a CUHK professor. Working under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member provides an excellent opportunity to practice language skills while contributing to ongoing research in a variety of fields, including anthropology, art, dance, economics, international trade and commerce, language studies, music, political science, and sociology.
Additionally, some EAP students may participate in the following teaching programs:
Teach English to students in Zengcheng, a provincial town with a mixed rural-industrial economy. This is a two-day weekend trip during which EAP students teach English at a local middle school and visit with small children at a children's center.
Teach English to high school students in Shantou, a rapidly developing Special Economic Zone along the eastern coast of the Guangdong Province. This is a three-day weekend trip.
Volunteer (or semi-volunteer) English teaching, mostly in English conversation classes, in Hong Kong high schools.
CUHK will provide additional information about these opportunities after arrival.Duration

On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. Once abroad, a host university faculty or staff member representing EAP will be your first point of contact for all matters. Among other things, the designated person provides support with academic matters, program logistics, and personal issues. The CUHK program is administered by an EAP Liaison Officer who is primarily responsible for academic advising. The Office of Academic Links and the International Asian Studies Programme provide additional support for all international students at CUHK.
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
