Overview
Pursue rigorous course work taught in English in the School of Engineering at the high-tech Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Founded in 1991, HKUST is a newer and dynamic institution with a goal to advance engineering teaching and research within and beyond Asia. Situated on a lovely seaside campus above Clear Water Bay in the New Territories, HKUST is located just 30 minutes away from Hong Kong's downtown center. The campus provides state-of-the-art academic, student life, and sports facilities for daily student needs.
Students attend classes with international students and host country students.
Course Opportunities
Concentration in engineering taught in English. You take the majority of courses in engineering. Limited Chinese language instruction is available; it is not a focus of the program at HKUST.
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
- Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
- MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 21 UC quarter units per semester are required, which is usually four or five courses depending on the number of units per course.

English; some courses in the Divisions of Humanities and Social Science are taught in Putonghua or Cantonese
Language Study
None.
Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Research and independent study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Arrangements for either are generally made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution. Predeparture preparation may be required.

Once abroad, a host university faculty or staff member representing EAP will be your first point of contact for all matters. Among other things, the designated person provides support with academic matters, program logistics, and personal issues. At HKUST, each school has a designated EAP Liaison Officer and program administrators who oversee EAP students and will assist you with various needs, including academic advising.
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
