Study Abroad in Hong Kong
University of Hong Kong (HKU)
Overview
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) offers all course work in a wide range of disciplines and departments in English (with the exception of classes in Chinese language and literature). Its attractive, compact campus is located on the slopes of Hong Kong Island facing Victoria Harbor and is only a few steps from Hong Kong's bustling financial district.
Students attend classes with international students and host country students.
Course Opportunities
Full curriculum in the arts, humanities, business, engineering, science, and social sciences. Limited Chinese language instruction is available; language study is not a focus of the program at HKU.
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
- Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
- MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study on EAP. A minimum of 21 UC quarter units per semester is required; the normal load is 25 UC quarter units, which usually equates to five courses.

Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Research and special study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Internships may be available to students in the year program. Arrangements for either are made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution. Predeparture preparation may be required.
If you are in the year option at HKU, you may be able to participate in a special program sponsored by the Faculty of Social Sciences during your second semester. If you are interested, be sure to include a preliminary inquiry with your EAP application.
You may volunteer to teach English, mostly conversation classes, in local high schools.
The Student Researchers Scheme places social science undergraduates in research assistant positions where they work with faculty on research projects in politics, public administration, psychology, sociology, social administration, statistics, and actuarial science.

On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. Once abroad, a host university faculty or staff member representing EAP will be students' first point of contact for all matters. Among other things, the designated person provides support with academic matters, program logistics, and personal issues. The HKU program is administered by an EAP Liaison Officer who is primarily responsible for academic advising. Additional support is provided through the Office of International Student Exchange (OISE) and the Center of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS).
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
