Study Abroad in Singapore

National University of Singapore (NUS)

Overview

The distinguished and top-ranked National University of Singapore (NUS) offers quality courses taught in English in practically all academic fields of study. Working toward a dynamic vision (establishing NUS as a key player within the global network of public universities) and with an ambitious academic mission (quality education, high impact research, and service to country and society), these objectives will be achieved, in part, with the help of academically strong students from diverse backgrounds with a passionate commitment to learning.

The National University of Singapore is situated on a modern, spacious campus about 20 minutes from the city center and is easily accessible by excellent public transportation. A circle of science and technology research parks border the campus and join NUS in promoting collaboration among research, education, and enterprise.

Students attend classes with international students and host country students.

Course Opportunities

This program offers regular university courses in a wide range of fields. Of particular interest are the natural sciences (especially tropical and marine biology), business and economics, social sciences, engineering, and comprehensive offerings in Southeast Asian studies and languages. Innovative options include scientific research opportunities, communications management, interdisciplinary programs combining business with law or with science and engineering, and the University Scholars Programme, which offers interdisciplinary courses with special challenges and learning experiences that take students beyond the classroom. Courses are called "modules" at NUS. Students are urged to choose a good number of course options for enrollment, as acceptance by NUS is based partly on space in selected courses.

Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:

  • EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
  • Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
  • MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

Units

You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad. A minimum of 21 UC quarter units per semester are required; the usual load is 24 UC quarter units (four 6-unit courses).

Language of Instruction

English

Language Study

No language study is required; however, the Center for Language Studies at NUS offers language classes in many Southeast Asian languages, including Malay, Tamil, and Indonesian from absolute beginning to more advanced courses for those with previous study. See samples of courses in the MyEAP Course Catalog under South and Southeast Asian Studies.

Internships, Research, and Independent Study

Research and independent study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Research opportunities in the sciences are available for application. Arrangements for these options are made at the EAP Study Center after arrival. Predeparture preparation may be required.

On-site Support

EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. The NUS program is managed by an EAP Administrative Coordinator and a National University of Singapore faculty member serving as the EAP Liaison Officer. They advise EAP students on academic matters, coordinate cultural activities, assist with program logistics, and provide support for personal matters. NUS student affairs units also provide a wide range of services such as orientation, housing, and student activities.

See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
