Study Abroad in Korea

Yonsei University

Overview

At Yonsei University, engage in stimulating academic work with students from around the world and gain unique perspectives on Asian international politics and society, including current South-North Korean relations and Korean pop culture. Set within a spacious, quiet, and wooded environment in western Seoul on the former site of a Yi Dynasty royal palace, Yonsei is one of the most internationalized universities within Korea. It is currently expanding from a traditional quad of gothic stone buildings-resembling those of an American East Coast university-to a campus infused with modern architectural styles.

Students attend classes with international and host country students.

Course Opportunities

Humanities, social science, business, and economics courses in English or Korean, and Korean language study. Particularly strong courses are available in Asian studies and Korean language and literature. Wider opportunities are available for students who can take regular university courses in Korean.

Graduate students and senior undergraduate students, especially business or international studies majors, may study at the Yonsei Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) or in the Global MBA program at the Graduate School of Business Administration. These professional schools offer in-depth studies of such subjects as international management, trade, finance, law, and area studies. Undergraduates are normally limited to one graduate course.

Non-native speakers of Korean language can apply for a year of intensive language study at the Korean Language Institute. Interested students should indicate this when completing the Yonsei University application for admission.

Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:

  • EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
  • Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
  • MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

Units

You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 21 UC quarter units per semester, usually four or five courses.

Language of Instruction

English and Korean

Language Study

Korean language study is required each semester except for students who are fluent in Korean.

Internships, Research, and Independent Study

Internships and independent study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Arrangements are made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution. Predeparture preparation is required for internships. Preference for internships will be given to students participating in the year program.

Independent study, including internships, may be arranged in certain fields. If you are interested in independent study, prepare a proposal either before departure or shortly after arrival at the Study Center. If you are interested in an internship in Korea, research internship opportunities before you arrive in Korea. Websites such as Job Korea, Incruit , and Find Job are good sources of information.

Internships for qualified students may be arranged by the EAP Study Center staff with Korean and international firms and organizations. Preference is given to students who are in the year program. Most sponsoring organizations require interns to have Korean and English fluency. In previous years, EAP students have interned at such organizations as the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, National Cancer Research Center, Prain (PR), FM Communications (advertising), Daimler, MTV Korea, and Nickelodeon Korea.

More information on EAP-arranged internships will be provided during the EAP orientation. Internship positions vary from year to year, but opportunities normally are available to qualified and enthusiastic students. Seriousness of purpose and a strong sense of responsibility are key factors in obtaining an internship. You may also seek a volunteer or non-academic internship. The EAP Study Center's volunteer club (group), EAP Angels, welcomes EAP students who are willing to volunteer for Severance Children's Hospital School, as an English teacher, or as an adoption agency interpreter. More information and sign-up will be available during the EAP orientation.
