Study Abroad in Taiwan
National Taiwan University (NTU)
Overview
The prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU), one of the top-ranked universities in Asia, offers a comprehensive curriculum in virtually all fields. EAP in Taiwan offers excellent opportunities for intensive study of traditional Mandarin Chinese. You may also enroll in NTU courses taught in English or Chinese, depending on your language ability. NTU’s main campus is in a spacious, park-like setting surrounded by shops, restaurants, and other businesses. The campus is easily accessible from the bustling heart of downtown Taipei.
Students attend International Chinese Language Program (ICLP) language classes with other UC students and/or attend NTU courses with Chinese and international students.
Course Opportunities
You may choose a combination of courses from any of the following categories.
Chinese Language Courses Taught through the ICLP
If you possess intermediate to advanced language ability, you may concentrate on language study using traditional characters in the ICLP. You will have daily intensive Chinese language instruction in such topics as life in Taiwan, short stories, film appreciation, and business conversation. If you enroll in the year program, you may choose to immerse yourself in Chinese language study during the first term and then take courses for your major during the second term.
Courses Taught in Mandarin Chinese at NTU
If you possess native or near-native Chinese language ability, you may take courses taught in Mandarin Chinese using traditional characters. NTU’s course offerings include advanced Chinese language and literature, engineering and science, and many other subjects.
Courses Taught in English at NTU
You may also take courses taught in English in a limited range of fields. Engineering is a particularly strong field.
The spring semester and year programs are recommended if you want to take NTU courses. Fall semester NTU courses end in mid-January; thus, students who take NTU courses during the fall semester must remain in Taipei through the end of the NTU semester in mid-January. Early departures are not permitted.
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
- Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
- MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

You are required to take 21 UC quarter units per semester; depending on the number of units per course, you will need three courses if you take language courses, and four or five courses if you take NTU courses only.

On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. A local faculty member, who serves as the EAP Liaison Professor, administers the EAP program at NTU along with a Study Center Coordinator. They advise students on academic matters, provide information on cultural events, assist with program logistics, and provide support with personal matters.
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
