Study Abroad in Turkey
Middle East Technical University
Overview
EAP students are fully integrated into Middle East Technical University's (METU) classes and have access to all fields of instruction. All courses are in English, but students can increase their ability to interact socially with Turkish students outside of classes if they study some Turkish. Students can take advantage of METU's particular strengths:
Gain expertise in political and security issues in the Middle East, the Balkans, and the Central Asian Republics for students in international relations and political science
Examine Ankara's history, the cultural differences in the use of space, and the geological factors involved in the use of space in the departments of Architecture and Regional and City Planning; METU has specialists in the history of Islamic, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine art and architecture
Explore Islamic thought and its implications for politics, education, and women's studies in the departments of Philosophy, Sociology, and Political Science
Increase depth or breadth in your engineering studies by taking courses in aeronautical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, food, geological, industrial, mechanical, metallurgical and materials, mining, and petroleum and natural gas engineering
Enroll in a course in beginning Turkish for visiting students
Visit METU's archaeological museum housing material discovered on its own site
Take advantage of METU's interdisciplinary, graduate-level archaeometry program that combines teaching with research activities and allows you to participate in restoration and conservation projects
METU is one of Turkey's most competitive universities. Due to the high demand for entrance to the university, most departments accept only the top 1 percent of the approximately 1.5 million applicants taking the National University Entrance Examination. More than 40 percent of METU's students go on to graduate school.
Course Opportunities
Regular university courses in science, engineering, the social sciences, and humanities. The following disciplines are particularly strong: architecture, graphic design, landscape, and urban planning.
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
- Host institution online catalogs or course listings:
- MyEAP Course Catalog lists courses previously taken by UC students. Additional courses may be available and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad. Students enroll in five courses for a total of 22.5 UC quarter units per semester.
Language of Instruction
English
Language Study
Two weeks of Turkish language instruction precede the fall term. Turkish language study is required for fall and year students during the fall term and for spring students during the spring term.
Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Independent study and internships for academic credit may be possible in this program. Arrangements are generally made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution. Predeparture preparation may be required.
Duration
Go to the Participants section to see current or past calendars.
Fall: early September to late January
Spring: early February to mid-June
Year: early September to mid-June
Extension is possible from the fall to the year.
Housing
METU's dormitories provide housing for 5,000 students. There is a big difference in quality, however, so it is strongly recommended that EAP students choose upgraded dorms and not the least expensive options. All rooms are comparable to standard UC dorm rooms, but the more expensive rooms will be much better maintained. EAP students can also locate their own apartments in Ankara, about 30 minutes distant from the campus. Dormitory life offers the best opportunity to meet and interact with Turkish and other international students.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. Local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
