Study Abroad in United Kingdom
International Summer School,
Pembroke-King's College, University of Cambridge
Overview
This eight-week summer program provides an opportunity to study at one of the United Kingdom's oldest universities. A special feature of the program is the opportunity to participate in excursions and cultural programs led by Cambridge University teachers' assistants. Optional after-hours classes and weekly lectures are offered for academic enrichment at no additional cost. Students attend classes with UC, other U.S., and international students. Spend your summer studying at the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world.
Course Opportunities
Students attend classes for the full eight weeks and select courses from a wide range of offerings within the humanities, social sciences, and arts. Some courses take place over four weeks (Module 1 in July, and Module 2 in August) while other courses are spread over the full eight weeks of the program (Module 3). Students must take three courses and may choose any one of the following course combinations:
One 8-week course and one 4-week course from the first module and one 4-week course from the second module
Two 8-week courses and one 4-week course from the first or second module
Two 4-week courses from the first module and one 4-week course from the second module
One 4-week course from the first module and two 4-week courses from the second module
Three courses are required for all students (5 quarter units each):
- Students choose from lecture/seminar style courses that are either four-week intensive sessions or eight-week sessions.
Students may submit a proposal to replace one course with a Cambridge-style tutorial course (similar to a UC independent study) that earns 5 quarter units. The proposal must be e-mailed to Dr. Alan Dawson before May 15.
See the host institution online catalogs or course listings for course descriptions.
Also, consult the Clusters and courses information.

Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Internships, research, and independent study are possible through this program. If a Special Study is taken, it must be for 5 UC quarter units. Arrangements are generally made after arrival at the host institution. Past students have earned UC credit while examining political theories and principles of justice and liberty, and writing research papers on the modern conjunction of cultural, political, and social concerns of the late 19th century as well as contemporary political philosophy and the history of political thought.

Summer: late June to late August
Housing
You are required to live in dormitory housing, most of it in 200-year old Cambridge College buildings, or historic houses on campus that have been converted to dormitories. You can choose standard or upgraded rooms and must pay the full accommodation cost before a room will be reserved. You will live with UC, other U.S., and international students. Dormitory living is like traditional College living with a Porter's Lodge, a staff of Residence Advisors that plans many optional events, and occasional formal dinners held in a College Hall.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
