Study Abroad in United Kingdom
International Summer School, University of Sussex
Overview
Students attend the International Summer School at Sussex during this eight-week program. Key to the mission of the university's International Summer School is the interdisciplinary course as well as small group teaching with individual attention. Courses are intensive and may include lectures, tutorials, labs, seminars, workshops, independent research, and fieldwork. Optional group excursions are offered every weekend during the program. The University of Sussex is a leading research university in the United Kingdom, and boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in Britain with extensive open green spaces.
Students attend classes with international students and UC students.
Course Opportunities
The program is divided into two, four-week sessions. Students enroll in one course during each session. The wide range of course offerings include American studies, anthropology, archaeology, art and architecture, biology, chemistry, creative writing, drama, economics, education, English, environmental science, film studies, forensic science, history, international relations, management studies, media and popular culture, music, philosophy and religion, physics, politics, psychology, and sociology.
Two courses are required for all students (6 quarter units each):
- One for the first four weeks
- One for the second four weeks
Use the following resources to learn about courses on EAP:
- EAP Program Search provides information on general areas of study.
- See the host institution online catalogs or course listings for course descriptions (level I courses are lower division and level II/III are upper division).
- MyEAP Course Catalog to search for courses previously taken by UC students.
Additional courses may be available at host institutions or program locations and not all courses may still be offered. Since courses in new programs have not yet been taken for credit, they may not appear in the MyEAP Course Catalog.

Housing
You are required to live in dormitory housing on campus that is prearranged by the University of Sussex, but you can choose between standard or upgraded rooms. Regardless of the room, you will prepare your own meals in a shared kitchen. This is a large and popular program so you will be meeting and living with many other international students as well as UC students.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC's network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of the U.K. and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.
See the EAP Program Guide (PDF) for program-specific details about host institutions, program structure, and courses; academic culture and conduct; internships, research, & independent study; units, exams, and grades; orientation; housing; and information about the intensive language program (if applicable).
