Summary
This spring semester program offers upper-division courses in economics and business. Courses taught in English are specially selected from Fudan University’s School of Economics, School of Management, and Department of Sociology. Instructors have revised these courses in collaboration with EAP to meet your needs as a UC student and to present a coordinated program. Additional courses are planned for the future.
The program is intended to serve students of business and economics, political economy, development, global and international studies, communication, and history.
Students attend classes with UC and host institution students.
Duration
Spring semester: mid-February to mid-July
Optional summer program: If you wish to continue language study after the spring program, you can apply to the summer Language and Culture Program at ECNU for the subsequent summer.
Academic Focus
Chinese economic development and business, China’s rapidly expanding role in the world economy and international relations, and Chinese society and culture in the era of globalization. Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta economy provide an ideal locale for case studies of economic development in a changing cultural, political, and international environment. Elementary and Intermediate Chinese language classes are also available.
Five courses are required for the program:
- One core course, Chinese Economic Reform and Development (6 quarter units), letter grade required
- Four electives chosen from the special program courses (4.5 quarter units each):
- The Dynamics of the Chinese Economy
- Entering the Chinese Market: Problems and Prospects
- Financial Development in China
- Perspectives on Traditional and Contemporary Chinese Culture and Society
- Consumer Behavior
- International Commercial Contracts
- Chinese Early Modern History
- Chinese Language (3 quarter units)
Language of Instruction
Prior Chinese language study is not required, but it is highly recommended.
Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Internships and independent study for academic credit are not possible in this program.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 22.5 UC quarter units are required.
Housing
You will live with international and UC students on campus in a student dormitory or in an apartment near the Fudan campus.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

Fudan University is acclaimed as one of the best universities in China and as the most comprehensive and internationally prominent university in Shanghai. It is a national university with about 26,700 undergraduate and graduate students, some 2,300 full-time faculty members, and 17 schools offering a complete range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, natural sciences and technology, and management. Internationally recognized for its academic excellence, Fudan University is actively engaged in international student and faculty exchanges and attaches great importance to its relationships with some 200 institutions of higher education worldwide. Its International Cultural Exchange School provides logistical support for foreign students and teaches Chinese language and culture.

Estimated Cost
The cost of study on EAP can be close to the cost of studying on
campus and is typically far less than the cost of non-UC study
abroad programs. You can also take your UC financial aid abroad! If you do not currently
receive UC financial aid, you may qualify for aid while on EAP. Each year, EAP students receive $1.3 million in study abroad grants and scholarships.

Application Requirements
Program-Specific Requirements
- Class level: junior, senior
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative GPA at time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. No exceptions.
- Courses: It is recommended that you take at least one course on Chinese history and culture prior to the program.
- Other: Fudan University will not admit you without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance. If you have a People’s Republic of China (PRC), Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan passport, you will not be allowed to stay in the university dormitory.
In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following
minimum requirements:
- Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into
the student’s UC degree program
- Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully
to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and
exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
- Willingness to abide by program regulations
- Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all
campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

Application Deadlines
Application deadlines and information on the application process are available through your Campus EAP Office.
In addition to your campus deadlines, there are deadlines by which the Campus EAP Office must submit the completed applications and accompanying materials to the Universitywide Office of EAP (UOEAP). For participation in the Program, it is critical that both campus deadlines and UOEAP deadlines are met. If the application is incomplete and not accompanied by the required materials noted, it will be returned to the Campus EAP Office.
Supplemental predeparture materials will be required for many programs, including, but are not limited to, host institution applications, visa and housing applications, medical clearances, etc.
