Summary
The Shanghai summer language and culture program is held at East China Normal University (ECNU). ECNU, one of China’s oldest and most reputable universities, is located in the southwest area of the city on an expansive green campus divided by a quiet, tree-lined canal. The university has a modern infrastructure with excellent sports facilities, a wide variety of clubs and activities, and comfortable residence halls on campus. Situated on the east coast of China, Shanghai today is aglow with neon and its new tall buildings embody the bold, gleaming features of the city as a futuristic international metropolis.
Students attend classes with UC students and other international students. Students also participate in EAP excursions and non-credit activities relating to Chinese culture.

Summer: early July to mid-August
Space permitting, qualified students may apply to extend their EAP participation. Extension to the fall program at Beijing Normal University is encouraged. A separate application to the fall UC-Fudan University Joint Program in International Studies (JPIS) is required. Extension to the year programs at Peking University or Beijing Normal University is not permitted. See the requirements page for each of these programs for qualifications.
Academic Focus
Chinese language; intensive written and conversational courses at several levels of elementary and intermediate Chinese.

Internships and independent study for academic credit are not possible in this program.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad; 12 UC quarter units are required.
Housing
You can live on or off campus in a foreign student dormitory or apartment in a single or double room shared with other UC students. You may choose to share a room with a local Chinese student, but you must pay the cost of the room.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

In the southwest area of Shanghai, East China Normal University (ECNU) is host to the EAP summer intensive Chinese language program. ECNU is known as a “garden university” for its beautiful campuses and buildings in both European and traditional Chinese styles. It is home to a top-rated program for teaching Chinese as a second language. ECNU is also distinguished in the subjects of modern Chinese history, Chinese philosophy, mathematics, geography, psychology, the physical and natural sciences, and teacher education. The university has quickly adapted to social and economic changes in China by developing programs in information science, life science ecology, design, economics, sociology, management, and urban studies.
ECNU serves some 26,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 2,700 students from abroad, with approximately 1,800 instructors. Founded in 1951 on the site of Great China University, ECNU has a modern infrastructure with excellent sports facilities, a library with 3.5 million volumes, student cafeterias and cafés, and residence halls.

Estimated Cost
The cost of study on EAP can be close to the cost of studying on
campus and is typically far less than the cost of non-UC study
abroad programs. You can also take your UC financial aid abroad! If you do not currently
receive UC financial aid, you may qualify for aid while on EAP. Each year, EAP students receive $1.3 million in study abroad grants and scholarships.

Application Requirements
Program-Specific Requirements
- Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate (language study only, not research)
- Language prerequisite: Minimum of one semester or two quarters of university-level standard Chinese. If at the time the program starts it will have been a year or more since you last took a course in standard Chinese, it is recommended that you refresh your proficiency before departure. Consult with your Campus EAP Advisor for details.
- GPA: 2.5 cumulative GPA and 3.0 language GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. No exceptions. Graduate students are required to have a 3.0 GPA.
- Other: ECNU will not admit you without a valid passport. US permanent residence and a green card are not sufficient documentation for admittance.
In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following
minimum requirements:
- Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into
the student’s UC degree program
- Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully
to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and
exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
- Willingness to abide by program regulations
- Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all
campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

Application Deadlines
Application deadlines and information on the application process are available through your Campus EAP Office.
In addition to your campus deadlines, there are deadlines by which the Campus EAP Office must submit the completed applications and accompanying materials to the Universitywide Office of EAP (UOEAP). For participation in the Program, it is critical that both campus deadlines and UOEAP deadlines are met. If the application is incomplete and not accompanied by the required materials noted, it will be returned to the Campus EAP Office.
Supplemental predeparture materials will be required for many programs, including, but are not limited to, host institution applications, visa and housing applications, medical clearances, etc.
