Study Abroad in Japan

Yokoso! Japan

Visit the EAP Media CenterStudy in almost any major while learning about Japan and its role in the economic, political, and sociocultural relationships of the dynamic Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

See how a highly developed Asian society integrates its traditional culture with modern technology, explore how anime and manga exemplify the significant impact of Japanese pop culture on the international scene, and immerse yourself in the study of Japanese language and customs, or join a lab team in hands-on engineering or scientific research.

EAP offers:

  • Special-focus programs in English or a combination of English and Japanese
  • Broad-based programs in English and Japanese with Japanese language study
  • Broad-based programs in Japanese requiring advanced Japanese language skills

Program locations include Tokyo-Yokohama, Kyoto and Osaka in the Kansai region, and Sendai in northern Honshu.

The Tsukuba fall quarter program is not recommended for Berkeley or Merced students because 18 UC quarter units are required for the quarter term for semester students and course work at appropriate language levels may not be available to meet unit requirements for financial aid. Tsuru fall or spring, Doshisha spring, or Meiji Gakuin fall or spring are recommended for Berkeley and Merced students wishing to study for a semester in Japan.

Types of EAP programs offered

  1. Immersion: You enroll directly in a partner institution in a foreign country and take courses alongside regular degree-seeking students of that institution

  2. International School: You take courses with other study abroad (international) students from around the world, but generally not students from the host country

  3. Joint: Faculty are from UC and the partner institution; courses are with students from both UC and the partner institution

  4. UC Construct: You take courses developed by UC with other UC students only

Some programs may be a combination of two types because some course opportunities depend on your foreign language proficiency or other prerequisites.
