Summary
The prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU), one of the top-ranked universities in Asia, offers a comprehensive curriculum in virtually all fields. EAP in Taiwan offers UC students excellent opportunities for intensive study of traditional Chinese language. You may also enroll in regular NTU courses taught in English or Chinese, depending on student language ability. NTU’s main campus is in a spacious, park-like setting surrounded by shops, restaurants, and other business. The campus is easily accessible from the bustling heart of downtown Taipei.
Students attend language classes with UC students and may attend regular NTU courses with host country students and international students.
Duration
Fall semester: early September to mid-December or mid-January
Spring semester: mid-February to mid-June (dates may vary depending on the dates of Chinese New Year)
Academic year: early September to mid-June
You are encouraged to extend your EAP participation from the fall to the academic year.
Academic Focus
Intensive Chinese language instruction is available for students who are not fluent in Chinese. For students who have adequate proficiency in standard Chinese, regular host institution course work is available in a wide variety of fields. For students who have less proficiency in standard Chinese, there are some regular host university courses taught in English in a limited number of fields. Students with native or near-native Chinese language ability are strongly recommended to apply to the year program; they will take all (or all but one) of their courses in the regular NTU curriculum taught in Chinese.
Fall semester intensive Chinese courses end in mid-December. Fall semester courses end in mid-January. Students who take regular NTU courses during the fall semester must remain in Taipei through the end of the NTU semester in mid-January. Early departures are not permitted.

Chinese language study is required each term if you are not proficient.
Internships, Research, and Independent Study
Internships and independent study for academic credit may be possible in this program. Arrangements are generally made at the Study Center after arrival at the host institution. Predeparture preparation may be required.
Units
You are required to take a full-time course of study while abroad: 21 UC quarter units per semester; depending on the number of units per course, three or four courses for students who take language courses, usually four or five courses for students who take NTU courses only.
Housing
Most EAP students live in NTU residence halls with other UC students and international students. You may make alternate arrangements for private housing.
On-site Support
EAP students are supported by UC’s network of EAP offices at every UC campus and partnerships with EAP host universities throughout the world. UC faculty and local staff abroad help students integrate into the culture of their host country and provide assistance with academics, housing, safety, and other issues.

EAP Taiwan is based at the National Taiwan University (NTU) in the capital city of Taipei. NTU, or Taida as it is known locally, is one of the top-ranked institutions in Asia. The university has distinguished departments in the humanities, social sciences, and the natural and applied sciences. Graduate institutes of international repute in such fields as art history, Chinese literature, history, musicology, philosophy, theater, food science, and a number of science and engineering fields; and research centers in population and gender studies, biotechnology, and biodiversity complete the academic panorama at NTU.
NTU enrolls about 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Admission to the university is gained through a highly competitive exam. Acceptance is considered a major accomplishment and the curriculum is rigorous. A network of influential social, business, and political leaders within and beyond Taiwan hold degrees from NTU.

Estimated Cost
The cost of study on EAP can be close to the cost of studying on
campus and is typically far less than the cost of non-UC study
abroad programs. You can also take your UC financial aid abroad! If you do not currently
receive UC financial aid, you may qualify for aid while on EAP. Each year, EAP students receive $1.3 million in study abroad grants and scholarships.

Application Requirements
Program-Specific Requirements
- Class level: sophomore, junior, senior, graduate
- Language prerequisite: one year of university-level Chinese
- GPA: 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 language GPA at the time of application and maintained through the end of the last term prior to departure. No exceptions.
- Other: An Asian history course is recommended prior to departure. Students who have only mainland Chinese or Taiwanese citizenship are not eligible for this program. Students who hold dual citizenship are eligible.
In addition to program-specific requirements, all applicants must meet the following
minimum requirements:
- Serious academic goals and a clear plan for integrating EAP studies into
the student’s UC degree program
- Social and cross-cultural sensitivity; maturity; ability to adapt successfully
to a different environment and a new education system; ability to assess and
exhibit appropriate behavior in a variety of situations
- Willingness to abide by program regulations
- Endorsement by the Campus EAP Selection Committee and completion of all
campus-specific requirements (an interview may be required)

Application Deadlines
Application deadlines and information on the application process are available through your Campus EAP Office.
In addition to your campus deadlines, there are deadlines by which the Campus EAP Office must submit the completed applications and accompanying materials to the Universitywide Office of EAP (UOEAP). For participation in the Program, it is critical that both campus deadlines and UOEAP deadlines are met. If the application is incomplete and not accompanied by the required materials noted, it will be returned to the Campus EAP Office.
Supplemental predeparture materials will be required for many programs, including, but are not limited to, host institution applications, visa and housing applications, medical clearances, etc.
