Housing Information

Housing is not guaranteed. Be aware that the standard rental contract for housing accommodations is nine months. Students attending UC for less than nine months may be subject to a cancellation fee.

 

California Housing Board (Non-UC Housing)

The California Housing Board provides a forum for all Education Abroad Program participants to share information about housing for rent and housing situations wanted in California. Students are encouraged to post messages about housing sublets, shared housing situations, rooms for rent, and rentals.

Application Deadline: June 2, 2008 by 5:00 p.m. California time.

Application Fee Required: $30 (non-refundable); Payment on-line by valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card & Discover).

Method of Payment Options: For ease and convenience, we suggest you make your initial housing payment online at www.housing.ucla.edu/myhousing. Payments made with checks, money orders, or cashier’s checks should be made payable to “UC Regents” in U.S. funds and drawn on a U.S. bank. No foreign money orders will be accepted. Credit card payment is preferred.

Application Notes: Students may be assigned to the various on-campus housing facilities as well as University Apartments. Students will be asked to choose one housing preference on the housing application (facility/room type, roommate, or theme communities). Rank your preferences.

Notification of Housing Assignment: Sent by e-mail; housing contract will follow. Contact Housing Assignments Office to request an extension if it is apparent that you will not be able to meet the deadline for return of contract.

Note that students must have their UCLA Logon ID and password (to activate your UCLA Logon ID, go to https://logon.ucla.edu) and a valid credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card & Discover) available to pay the non-refundable $30 application fee on-line.

Priority Status: EAP students are given priority on the placement wait list.

Application Deadline: None

Application Fee Required: $35 (non-refundable); express processing (response within 3 days of receipt of application) is available for an additional $20 fee.

Membership Fee: $150 (payable at check-in)

Deposit Required: $1,000 (refundable)

Reservation Fee: $500 (non-refundable) fee is applied to the first rent payment of the term.

Method of Payment Options: Cashier's check, traveler's check, international money order, or credit card (Visa or Master Card) accepted. Personal checks cannot be accepted.

When completing the application form, students should identify themselves as Education Abroad Program students to benefit from priority status on the placement wait list.

Co-ops provide a living environment that may be very different from living in a campus residence hall. See definitions. Students may find smaller co-op houses quieter and cleaner while larger co-ops provide opportunities for meeting a greater variety of students.

Tips on Finding Housing

This office lists a variety of living alternatives within the Los Angeles community. The on-line listing service is free to UCLA students. The listings, updated daily, include rooms in private homes, roommate situations, private residence halls, apartments, houses, and guest houses.

Students who have a UCLA Logon ID and password: Use your UCLA Logon ID and password to log on to CHO’s on-line rental housing database. To activate your UCLA Logon ID, go to https://logon.ucla.edu.

Students who do NOT yet have a UCLA Logon ID and password: E-mail a request for a temporary account for on-line database access. Identify yourself as an "EAP Reciprocity Student."

Suggested Arrival Date: You may arrive no more than 30 days prior to the start of your academic program. Program dates are printed on your visa certificate of eligibility.*

Dashew Center for International Students & Scholars (DICOP) Events

International Student "Maintaining Your Visa Status" Workshop (Mandatory)

Dates: To be announced mid-summer.

Registration: Sign up online (after August 1, 2008).

NOTE: Reciprocity students must attend ONE of the visa workshop options listed above.
Remember to take your passport, I-94 card (the I-94 is a white card often stapled in your passport and stamped at the port-of-entry), and I-20 or DS-2019 form.

Orientation Program (DICOP) (Optional but highly recommended!)

Session I: September 2 - 5, 2008 (registration deadline September 2, 2008)

Session II: September 15 - 19, 2008 (registration deadline September 15, 2008)

Fee: There is a $59 fee for participation. It includes many benefits such as workshops, social events, tours of West Los Angeles, and student identification card processing.

EAP Orientation (Mandatory):

If you are unable to attend the Dashew Center Orientation Program, then attend a UCLA EAP orientation meeting for reciprocity students. There are several dates to choose from. Pre-registration is not required.

Ground Transport to Campus

To get to Westwood from the LAX airport, take a taxi (approximately $25.00) or a "shuttle van." Look for the blue "Van Stop" sign outside the baggage claim area and tell the airport employee that you need a shuttle to UCLA or Westwood. There are many van companies whose costs range from $16.00 to $34.00.

Enrollment Period for New Students: July 7, 2008 (begins 23:00 California time)

Enrollment Appointment Time: Available on URSA on or after June 11, 2008.

Students must have their UCLA logon ID and password to enroll. To activate the UCLA logon ID, go to https://logon.ucla.edu as soon as possible. Check the enrollment website (URSA) to confirm your scheduled enrollment appointment time.

This information is for all majors except the impacted majors listed below.

If the URSA enrollment system indicates that a code/permission to enroll is required:

a) Locate the course in the Schedule of Classes

b) Consult the course description in the General Catalog to determine that you meet all course prerequisites

c) E-mail the instructor to request permission to enroll:

  • Select the "Course Website" button to see the instructor’s e-mail address.
  • Include information regarding your academic preparation for any course prerequisites.

Undergraduate Advisor Information:

Students will receive (by mail) a student ID number and password for web registration. This information will be printed on the UCLA acceptance letter you receive with the I-20 visa document.

 

Graduate students
Graduate students usually register after arrival and after consultation with the department’s graduate advisor. Check with your host department for registration advising.


English Language Placement Testing

Graduate EAP Reciprocity Students: Required of all students whose native language is not English.

Undergraduate EAP Reciprocity Students: Required of all students whose native language is not English and who scored less than 630 (paper), 267 (computer) or 109 (iBT) on the TOEFL exam, or 8.5 on the IELTS exam.

Placement Exam is Required to Maintain Enrollment in Classes: Students who do not take the exam will have a "hold" placed on their enrollment (the student will not be allowed to enroll or benefit from student services until the requirement is completed).

Health Insurance

2008-09 costs and information are listed below. Revised policy brochures and information for 2008-09 are not yet available.

Requirement: Students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan unless they complete a waiver form that provides proof of equivalent coverage, and it is approved.

Cost: Undergraduates $252 per quarter (USHIP Basic); graduates $446 per quarter (GSHIP).

Billing: Each quarter

Spring: March 20, 2009

Instructions: For more information about SHIP requirements and benefits, and enrolling in SHIP Plus for dental coverage, go to the Ashe Center Website (Select "Insurance").
