Housing Information

Housing is not guaranteed. Be aware that the standard rental agreement for some housing accommodations is nine months. Students attending UC for less than nine months may be subject to a cancellation fee.

California Housing Board (Non-UC Housing)

The California Housing Board provides a forum for all Education Abroad Program participants to share information about housing for rent and housing situations wanted in California. Students are encouraged to post messages about housing sublets, shared housing situations, rooms for rent, and rentals.

Graduate/Undergraduate Students

EAP reciprocity students are guaranteed a contract for University housing, as long as they adhere to all procedures and deadlines.

If you submit multiple applications, the last one will be accepted.

Late applicants will be put on a waiting list.

Application deadline: June 1, 2008, 4:00 p.m. (California Time)

Application Fee: $50 for security deposit billed to students' BARC account if awarded a housing contract, $25 contract processing fee also billed to students' BARC account if a contract is signed and returned.

Method of Payment Options: Student's BARC account will automatically be billed.

Notification of Housing Assignments: Apartment and roommate assignments are generally e-mailed by the end of August each year.

Application Deadline: Apply as soon as possible. First-come, first-served basis.

Deposit Required: $40 membership fee (non-refundable), and $400 (double) or $600 (single) refundable deposit. Payable upon arrival.

Method of Payment Options: International money order or travelers check.

Notification of Housing Assignments: Sent by e-mail or fax as requested by applicant.

Note: A limited number of assignments are reserved for international students. The living environment of the Co-Op emphasizes community, cooperation, and responsibility. Residents are expected to make a contribution to the care of their surroundings through monthly work hours, and weekly participation in meal preparation and house chores.

Tips on Finding Housing

The Off-Campus Rental Listing Service is free to currently enrolled UCSB students. Students can search and/or submit listings for off-campus housing. If you do not yet have your UCSB Perm and PIN, you may request temporary log-in access by e-mail. Identify yourself as an "EAP Reciprocity Student."

You may arrive no more than 30 days prior to the start of your academic program. Program dates are printed on your visa certificate of eligibility.*

Fee: $40 orientation fee will be charged to each student's billing statement (BARC).

*Students who do not have pre-arranged housing are advised to arrive as early as possible.

Temporary Accommodation Information

Student Hotel 2008 (UC Housing)

Students may obtain affordable overnight accommodations at a residence hall on the Santa Barbara campus. Friends and family members are not eligible and must find accommodations in local hotels (See resources below).

Deadlines and Calendars

Undergraduate students

Students will receive a student perm number and a PIN for registration via e-mail.

Enrollment window for Fall term: July 5 through September 10 at midnight (All hours are Pacific Standard Time.)

Graduate students
Graduate students usually register after arrival and after consultation with the department’s graduate advisor. Check with your host department for registration advising.


English Language Placement Testing and Learning Services

Language Placement Exam: Education Abroad Program (EAP) students are not required to take the English Language Placement Exam. However the exam is a requirement for enrollment in the appropriate level of ELP classes. It will be to student's advantage to take the exam, if they are planning to enroll in English Language classes at some time during their EAP studies. ELPE is only a placing exam and implies no obligation to enroll in English Language Program classes.

Exam Information: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., September 19, 2008 in Lotte Lehman Concert Hall (Music Bldg.).

Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) assists students in their mastery of university-course material through course-specific tutoring and academic skills development.


Health Insurance

2008-09 costs are noted below. Revised policy brochures and nformation for 2008-09 are not yet availble.

Requirement: Students are automatically enrolled in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan, unless they complete a waiver form that provides proof of equivalent coverage, and it is approved.

Cost: $306.50 per quarter for undergraduates; $719 per quarter for graduate students.

Billing: Each quarter

Payment Deadline: Students may pay insurance fees at the cashier’s office on arrival. Fees must be paid by the end of the first week of classes.

Effective Dates:

Winter: January To be announced.
Spring: March To be announced.

Insurance Information

Waiver Form

Note: The medical plan for waiver must be provided by a recognized company or government agency that is owned, headquartered and operated in the United States. Foreign insurance plans with U.S. affiliates or representatives, travel insurance plans and reimbursement programs of any kind do not qualify, including reimbursement arrangements or vouchers from home governments or their U.S.-based consulates.
