Academic Procedures FAQ

University of Edinburgh

  1. Is there a website which lists the courses that EAP students may enroll in and timetables for these courses?

    Courses:   http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/visitingstudent/courses/dsp-schools.html?session=both

    Time Tables: in departments

  2. Can EAP students take any course that they have the pre-requisites for or are there some courses that they are restricted enrolling in?

EAP students can generally enroll in any 1st or 2nd year courses without any problems.   Entrance to Honors courses in the College of Humanities and Social Science (i.e., 3rd and 4th year) is much more difficult unless (1) there are open slots for visiting students in a course, and (2) a student has taken at least 3 prior courses in that subject.  Even then, it may be very difficult to get into Honors courses in the following subjects: English Literature, Politics, Psychology, History, and Sociology. Entry to 4th year courses is not possible for any visiting students. Please note that this also applies to 3rd year University of Edinburgh students who also cannot enroll for 4th year courses.

Entry to courses in Science and Engineering is usually subject to meeting very specific prior study requirements. These can be discussed with the College Visiting Student Office or your Director of Studies (see 4 below).

  3. Can EAP students enroll in courses themselves or does someone else do this for them (e.g., before they’ve arrived)?

EAP students cannot enroll directly for courses. The University of Edinburgh College Visiting Office will have pre-enrolled you in any courses approved by the (College Office). These courses are listed in your offer/joining letter (late course changes approved by email will also pre-enrolled) and can be seen if you access your Edinburgh student portal website (MyEd). If you wish to make changes to courses when you arrive then please see point 5 be low.

  4. Will they be assigned an academic advisor?

Yes, each student is assigned a Director of Studies (a.k.a. “DOS”) who is a faculty member, generally in the subject they have declared their major in.  He/she is the person to initially consult about signing up for course work or changing courses.   He/she is also the contact for any academic difficulties (e.g., inability to attend class due to illness, etc..)

  5. How do students go about changing courses after they’ve first enrolled?

    Humanaities and Social Sciences:

Once you start your studies (including orientation week) the first person to contact is your DOS.  If the new course is Honors level, student will need to visit an academic advisor in the Visiting Student Office in their College then visit the department hosting the new course they wish to enroll in.

Prior to Orientation Week ALL course admission decisions are made by the College Visiting Student Offices.

    College of Science and Engineering:

If after the first week of study (including orientation week) on a particular course, you find that it is unsuitable (e.g. the content does not match your academic background) you should meet with your DoS and discuss suitable alternatives.  You should also discuss any changes to your study programme with your academic advisor at your home university.

  6. What is the deadline for making changes to courses?

College of Humanities and Social Science: You can make changes up until the end of the 2nd week of the semester. Changes in the 3rd week are also usually possible for most subjects at first and second year level but usually not possible for 3rd year (Honors) courses.  All changes are subject to places being available and you meeting academic pre-requisites.

College of Science and Engineering… In discussion with your DoS, you can change your course choices within the first two weeks of the semester.

  7. For first semester courses, will final examinations be held at the end of the course or at the end of the academic year?

Both.   Courses designed for Visiting (Semester 1) Students will have their final exams at the end of the semester (i.e., before the Christmas/New Years break).   Most other Semester 1 courses have their final exams at the end of the academic year (i.e., in May).

  8. Are there workshops that help Visiting Students learn how to write essays/take exams?

Yes.  Through the Centre for Teaching and Learning Assessment:
