EAP FACULTY ADVISORY COMMITTEES

The University of California is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in the world. It occupies the top echelon of instruction in California and is the official research arm of the State. Among its thousands of faculty members, the University of California harbors experts on almost all disciplines, as well as countries and regions in the world. As a key and core part of the University, the Education Abroad Program uses this faculty expertise to guide the initiation, development, implementation, and administration of study abroad programs. In addition to the administrative, academic oversight, and/or teaching roles played by faculty as Study Center Directors, Campus Faculty Directors, Senate committee members, course instructors, and UOEAP Deans and Directors, EAP uses faculty, either individually or as members of groups, to advise EAP on numerous academic issues. These advisory procedures take many forms:

  • UCIE Review Committees which review all new programs after 3 years and all programs within a country every 10 years.
  • Departmental Faculty Liaison Officers on some campuses who advise the Campus Faculty Director on EAP and other international education issues.
  • Informal use of knowledgeable faculty as members of ad hoc site visit teams, as sounding boards for new program proposals, and as initiators or advisors on new program ideas.
  • Faculty Advisory Committees (FACs), including:
    • Program Development FACs (design of self-construct programs, evaluation of proposed new immersion programs, and review of new self-construct programs after their first year of operation). Recent committees include:
      • Joint Program on Contemporary Japanese Culture, International Christian University, Tokyo
      • Economics and Business Program, Fudan University, Shanghai
      • Summer Language and Culture Program, UC Center Madrid
      • Summer Language and Culture Program, UC Center Paris
    • Standing FACs for Academic Oversight (Steering Committees, on-going self-construct program FACs, and FACs for some EAP Centers led by local Liaison Officers as recommended in the Study Center Task Force report).
      • UC Center Paris: French and European Studies
      • UC Center Mexico: Mexico-US Comparative Perspectives
      • UC Center Rome: Rome through the Ages
      • London Fall Semester Program
      • Joint UC/Lund University Summer School Steering Committee
      • Joint Program in International Studies, Shanghai Steering Committee
      • Siena Language and Culture Program
      • Concepción Language and Culture Program [forthcoming]
    • Strategic Planning FACs devoted to planning for particular disciplines, locations, countries, or regions. (Here we are tapping faculty expertise to give us advice, information, and insights about critical parts of the world to inform program development and long term planning.)
      • Arabic Language/Islamic Studies [forthcoming]
      • UK Immersion Strategy
      • Japan Reorganization

In some cases, a given FAC may encompass more than one descriptive category or a FAC or Review Committee designed for one purpose may morph into functioning for a different purpose. A Steering Committee initially charged with designing a new program, for example, may continue on to provide academic oversight and periodic review.

FACs usually include UC faculty members who have previous, relevant experience with EAP to provide continuity and memory in program advice as well as faculty members new to EAP who can bring fresh perspectives. The FACs will also include three standing members from UOEAP: the Associate Director/Academic Dean or the Associate Dean, the appropriate Regional Director, and an Academic Development Senior Analyst.
